There was no immediate word on whether there were any injuries or damage in the nearby, sparsely populated area.
The USGS said the earthquake was located about 41 kilometers northeast of Puerto Obaldia, Panama. The epicenter was 10 kilometers (6 miles) deep. Another 4.9 magnitude earthquake occurred 10 minutes after the earthquake.
The Civil Defense Agency of Panama said Twitter that the earthquake was felt in the provinces of Darien, Panama, Guna Yala and West Panama. “There is no report of results,” it said.

The affected region is home to the Darien Gap, a sparsely populated area of dense forest that is the first inland route for northern migrants from South America. Hundreds of thousands of immigrants have passed through in recent years.
