GUATEMALA CITY — Guatemalan police arrested a prosecutor on Friday on anti-immigrant charges, accusing him of abuse of power.
Stuardo Campos was previously the country’s anti-corruption leader under former President Jimmy Morales. It was not immediately clear if the charges related to his position or his ex.
The complaint against Campos was made by the right-wing group Foundation Against Terrorism, a group that initially defended soldiers accused of war crimes, but has also targeted members of the criminal justice system who have been involved in corruption.
“These complaints are false,” Campos said. “I know that my anti-corruption work has made me hate in many circles.”
Campos was known for his investigation into the work of the state’s highways during the Morales administration. Several officials in this district were arrested due to repeated landslides and other problems.
In recent years, several prosecutors and judges who handled anti-corruption cases have been investigated and prosecuted. Many of them have fled the country to avoid being prosecuted by the US Attorney General’s office, and others are accusing them of seeking revenge against lawmakers.
Most recently, as a senior immigration judge, Campos was recognized for breaking up migrant smuggling rings and overseeing the first extradition of Guatemalans to the United States accused of smuggling.
