The largest LGBTQ rights organization in the US joined other civil rights organizations on Tuesday in issuing a travel advisory in Florida, warning that the newly proposed laws and policies could be dangerous for minorities, immigrants and gay travelers.
The Human Rights Campaign joined the NAACP, the League of United Latin American Citizens, the Florida Immigrant Coalition and Equality Florida in issuing travel warnings or moving to the Sunshine State, one of the most popular states for immigrants to visit the US.
While the advocacy group said it did not want to boycott or hold a boycott in Florida, it said it wanted to highlight new legislation passed by the Republican-controlled Florida Legislature that it said was hostile to the LGBTQ community, banning abortion. obtaining and allowing Floridians to carry concealed weapons without a permit.
“Visitors should join us in protesting these horrific policies,” said Kelley Robinson, president of the Human Rights Campaign.
“Those who choose another place to work, go to school or vacation should clearly explain why they are not going to Florida.”
The NAACP says new laws and policies led by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis are “openly hostile” to black Americans, people of color and LGBTQ+ people. It has issued a travel advisory protesting the state’s “attempts to erase Black history and ban diversity, equality, and inclusion programs in Florida schools.”
Late last week, the NAACP, the nation’s oldest civil rights organization, issued a warning warning that recent laws and policies proposed by Gov. Ron DeSantis and Florida lawmakers are “openly opposing African Americans, people of color and LGBTQ+.”
More than 137.5 million tourists visited Florida last year, more than before the pandemic, according to Visit Florida, the state’s tourism advocacy organization.
Tourism supports 1.6 million full-time and part-time jobs, and visitors spent $98.8 billion in Florida in 2019, according to last year’s statistics.
